Ableton w/Event EZ-BUS on OS-X

Post by Newbieton » Tue Dec 31, 2002 7:52 pm

Hello, I am running Live 1.5 on OS-10.1.5(G4800mhz), and was thinking about getting an EZ-Bus from Event.

Is there any known issues with said setup?

Anybody running a similar setup?

:?:

Also am looking to upgrade to Live 2.0.

Would recommend upgrading to Jaguar. Would also recommend alternative audio adapter if you need more than one stereo input/output, since Live does not support multiple audio adapters. If you need audio + MIDI, consider Edirol instead.

"If you need audio + MIDI, consider Edirol instead."

OH NO!! Dont say that!! Known problems with the EZ bus? Or is Edirol just rock solid?

I have an Edirol UA-5(I think that's what it is), and have had some glitches with Ableton and the Edirol.

It's just cheaper. Probably the only reason to get an Ezbus over the others is if you need a mixer.

Thanks! Well, that's good news then.

I was thinking of going the cheaper route - but (as you mentioned) the mixer is a nice additive along with the control surface abilities of the EZBus.

You won't be able to use it as a control surface with Live or Reason. Only Reason and Cubase.

EZBus Controller Surface and Live

Post by fugu » Sun Mar 16, 2003 9:34 am

Hi,

1st things 1st, the EZBus works just fine in 10.2 as a control surface for Live (2.03) as long as it's setup properly in the Audio/MIDI Setup application in 10.2 (this involves creating a single interface device (the EZBus virtual controllers) and attaching it to MIDI I/O 1 on the Main EZBus Device).

A source of confusion however is that there is no EZBus Profile editor for MacOSX, one needs to use WinME, 2K, XP (i have VPC so it's not too bad) to access the Profile Editor to create a profile for Live.

Also, Live's creation processes are different enough to make me pause in how best to map the available control options to the EZBus control surface..
While new to Live, I can already see myself using it a few different ways, so (as with any control surface) it'll take a little while until i'm settled on a Function mapping (the EZBus Virtual Map Profile Consists of: 8 'virtual scenes' each 4 'pages' deep.

8*4=32 'virtual surfaces'

Each Surface contains the following controllers:
9 faders
27 buttons
5 transport controls
8 location calls, and an input wheel.

Each controller can transmit in a number of differnet modes (3 way switch, fader constraints, etc) and methods so mapping that to Live's Session and Arrangment Possibilities are going to be fun but probably some time too..

Also, Live's Template file (~/Library/Preferences/Ableton/Live2.x/Template.als) would need to be made in tandem to the EZBus profile.

I hope to post some results of my mapping as soon as they're ready, but at this point i've done little more then size it up. However, at first glance, some diligence could easily yield dramatic results for Arranging and Performance/Session playing in Live.

I got the EZBus for it's Mixer and MIDI ports, but the complexity as a control surface is not to be missed, too bad that there's not a Profile map editor for MacOSX, or a Control Template manager within Live.

I have a similar setup as fugu, with ezbus on mac osx 10.2, g4 tibook and firewire drives. This thing abosultely rocks for the $500 I paid for it.

Because the ezbus is fitted with adat ins/outs and I am on a laptop, I am looking for a pcmcia card that might offer 1 pair of adat ins/outs. The only solutions I see at this time are the motu 828, presonus (no osx driver yet), or rme hammerfall. All of these would be overkill for my applications really...

Event has the EZ8 but it is pci interface, sure I could get a magma expansion bay but what would the point of owning my tibook then?

So does anyone have any suggestions or know of any companies plans to offer a pcmcia adat card? This would make the laptop, ezbus, + adat combo very hard to beat considering the control surface, midi, comp+gate, portability... maybe I will write into Event to see if they have any plans to offer a card such as this??
