well as time goes on and technology gets more advanced and with more jobs opening up and they can do it for you, then of course people are going to lose there natural skill sets they should have from the old days, back then yeah it was cool to work on stuff like that, these are new ages people are different and have different interest then others, i for one love cars, know a little about them cuz i used to work in parts, but i dont like working on cars thats just me im not lazy, and building stuff just another thing i dont care for, not cuz im lazy, just cuz i could pay someone to do a banging ass job for me and do it right instead of me trying to tackle it, and ruin it. cuz i know i would lol....

and with things being more complicated now a days like cars and having more computer tech on them, it would take a normal person a long time to learn how to repair or fix it, same thing with construction...things are just so advanced that these are no longer natural skill sets in our lives and we now have to go through the hassle of going to school for 4 years to learn how to do it

When these two sides unite you get a big sack of collective useless who are shelling out money for things that were once considered mandatory to your life skill set.

I'm willing to bet the older members of this forum will say "I/she still does that" but that answer will become less frequent as the age level decreases.

Here in Japan most women still fantasize about being a house wife and I would say a huge majority are. Lately though things are changing and because of long working hours for men and more women going to be career women the birthrate has decreased rapidly. The elder population of
Japan is the majority.

As far as gender roles are concerned there is a new "type" of man in Japan. One woman has labeled them as herbivorous men because they do not have any drive towards power, sex, or money. They are normally in their 20's or 30's and are very skinny, shy, and clumsy(agility wise and in love also). There are a shit load of these guys here. Basically it's cool to pluck your eyebrows until they are razor thin.

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiap ... index.html

On the other hand we have really strong women. Here in Osaka there is a type of older woman called "Osaka Obachan" which means Osaka Grandma. She is really scary in that she is extremely vocal to anyone at anytime if she see's fit. Especially to her husband from whom she has snatched his pants and dignity away.

Most men work long hours and fork over their entire salary while their wife hands them a measly $300 a month for allowance. There's a funny article about it here: http://www.japantoday.com/category/kuch ... -amex-card

As far as women not being able to cook here it seem's that the generation that's in it's late 20's early 30's is the most useless. Most of the children stay at home with their parents until their married and with some of these students I have to teach, it's easy to understand why. With such amazing hobbies as "sleeping" and "watching DVD's," I can't imagine why these diamonds haven't been scooped up.....ha. Anyway, because they live with their parents they rarely have a serious job(often office worker...but only as temporary staff members). Most of them have no independent skills and have no desire to move out(unless of course they miraculously meet that man who will sweep her away to their tiny shit apartment where they will be miserable together and sleep in different beds or even rooms)

I still blame the federal reserve for "womens lib". Somebody in an office somewhere thought "you know what? if we can convince women that they WANT to work and get them all fired up about it we could make an ass load of money"
Yea, but then the question becomes "should people be told what they should be doing with their lives?" and I think the answer is definitely no. This is what I think that humanity has been working toward for ages, and in every age. The fact that people don't always make the right choices or choose to learn simple basic things is a by-product of the fact that the average first-world citizen has more choices than ever before, whereas in times past you had to conform to a certain model, if you wanted to live with any sort of shred of decency.

I don't know, it could be me... but I think the modern age is still a little bit better than it used to be. I don't have to kill for my food, I get luxuries like computers and cellphones and Ableton Live, I can expect to live past 40, and all is quite well. Of course, with illiteracy being pretty much eradicated these days I have to put up with a vast legion of morons that populate the internet, but whatever. I'll take the bad with the good.

Ya know, that's a real good question. But honestly even though this is an Ableton and music forum I quite honestly can't think of another public setting where you can drop random topics and get a lively discussion. If you can think of a better place post it.

I'm not hating on it, just commenting. A little controversy is always good.

I have no answer to your question, my parents were hippies and gender roles were all over the map. My dad is mellow, step mom gets her way a lot, but he builds houses from the ground up.

My mom is tough as hell, and so is the step dad, wouldn't step to either. Though she's also very female, button jar and ridiculous names for animals etc.

In my life, I'm all over the map, dated women who liked knitting and ANTM, and girls who could probably kick my ass. I don't think gender roles matter too much unless you want them to. I tend to think they have a place, and tend to like girls that are girly, but it's not always the case.

Tarekith wrote:Actually I don't think the roles have declined so much as reversed in many ways. For whatever reason the recession seems to be hitting women in the workforce less than men. Out of the 5 couples my wife and I are friends with out here in Seattle, the women all have jobs while the men are stuck unemployed struggling to find work. Though I still do the construction and work on the cars :)

I think there's a lot of reverse sexism going on in the workplace right now. As companies have to make cuts they feel they have to keep a certain amount of diversity and, let's face it, guys generally like women in their workplace regardless of what quality of work they do.

I have a female friend with 0 college experience under her belt but she has consistently kept or quickly found well paying jobs regardless of the state of the economy simply because she's a hot chick in the IT department. That's a fact and she owns up to it.

Hey, here's a sexist joke/truth. Women won't fix anything that is out of arms reach. If a ceiling light bulb goes out or fire alarm battery starts beeping they'll just live with it. Meanwhile if you tie a banana to the ceiling of a chimp cage the chimp will figure out how to stack boxes and wood to get to it.
I think as far as the women keeping their jobs goes, it's a bit simpler than all that - women STILL get paid less than men on average

I will be 40 this next month. My wife and I have a mixed up deal. At the current moment (last few years) she has been the primary bread winner, and I the "mr. mom". I cook, watch the kids, clean (not to wife's satisfaction). I also have trade skills, and spend enough time keeping my self in good enough shape to give the "apperence" that I could kick ass any time and place ( I am a pacificst and would rather never have to)
I do admit, my auto mechanic skills have suffered

Maybe you should move to some of those mormon communities in your country, or to the middle east.
