anyone a cure?
Yeah, I thought it was just the warm weather, but subjectively I see this too with 10.5.8. Maybe it's Apple's new strategy to reduce component life and increase sales...

Guten Abend Herr SubFunk!

Did you check Activity Monitor (active processes - sort by CPU)? - Anything strange?

Did you use the combo update (see my last post)?

3rd party stuff incompatible?

SubFunk you could also try resetting the System Management Controller (SMC):

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 (you're on Macbook / Pro, right?)

I'm on a Core 2 Duo Macbook (older black casing) and 10.5.8 fixed an issue I was having, although it is not documented in the release notes. Under 10.5.7 and earlier I was experiencing insane program hangs with iTunes particularly. Launching the app would bring up the pinwheel for at least 30 seconds. Also adding any music to it would lockup the app for about the same amount of time. I did all known troubleshooting, besides and archive and install before but nothing was working. Now under 10.5.8 everything is fixed. iTunes launches far faster and does not freeze at all. I'm so happy, as I wanted to throw my computer out the window. I know that is not Ableton specific but I do use iTunes to manage my library. As far as Ableton goes, everything seems fine. Furthermore, most apps seem to be launching noticeably faster. This could just be due to the installer updating the prebindings, but I do that semi-regularly and it seems more than that. Overall, very pleased.

guten abend steko,

yeah i am on a macbook pro, i did not run anything unusual as i always do... on a normal day safari, mail, ical, live, iTunes and addressbook is open... if i make music only the music apps is open i need... nothing changed in that respect.

also the idle temperature is about 10-15 degree higher and the fan goes nuts right after a startup before even any apps is open...

i try the reset, though and oh, yeah i reinstalled from the combo updater... no change...

danke steko!

Hey SubFunk!

Maybe this helps: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?sto ... 1151118261

Especially:
Remove external devices you may have attached to your system. These can include hard drives, audio interfaces, scanners and printers, cameras, and input devices.

Boot into Safe Mode, which will load only the basic kernel extensions, and help you pinpoint whether the problem is with third-party kernel extensions.
Starting up in Safe Mode
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), do this:
1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
2. Press the power button.
3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

For those having Airport problems:

This update is recommended for some Intel-based Macintosh computers running Mac OS X v10.5.8 and addresses an issue with AirPort performance while running on battery power. It may only be installed on:?? MacBook (13-inch, Late 2007)? MacBook (13-inch, Early 2008)? MacBook (13-inch, Late 2008)? MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2008)? MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2008)? 10.5.8 nixed my permission database. i wasn't really able to restore the correct permission for every file. Although all apps i need are running correctly, this was a huge pita and took me about 5 hours at least to get it fixed at least to the point the os was working again.

It seems this time the combo update screws up more things than the smaller delta update. pretty weird

Only for those who did the 10.5.8 combo update (the incremental delta= 10.5.7 -> 10.5.8 upgrade seems fine):

Again,

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jsp ... 28&start=0

there is something wrong with the 10.5.8 combo update:

If you install the combo & then repair permissions (what normally you should do) permissions on some files are set totally wrong!

So this time you have to install the combo twice in a row & then repair permissions.

Normally: repair install repair

This time: repair install install repair

If you already installed the 10.5.8 combo and repaired permissions afterwards, you have to install the combo two more times & then repair permissions (I verified permissions after the second install -> everything was fine -> then repaired.

Can anyone verify that your user presets for AU/VST plugins are still there and working after the update?

I once lost all my presets by updating OSX (I think it was a 10.5 update, can't remember which one though).. I don't ever want to experience that again :(

@ djwack:

Presets seem fine here.

If you loose them, just drag 'em back from your backup:

/Users/your home folder/Library/Audio/Presets

&

/Library/Audio/Presets

Live 8.0.4 still crashes on me occasionally in 10.5.8 so I guess all is good ;)
