I have sussed out lives major feel problem
Before you rush out to buy Cubase, bear in mind that you can have Live as a Rewire slave but for some reason you can't have VSTs in Live when it is a Rewire slave.
The OP is right: Live, though an immensely creative, spontaneous platform, is not exactly designed to inject sould into your music.
Great topic for discussion, though. How do you put soul into your Ableton music? God knows, it doesn't all sound like house music.

I dont understand.. Live lacks "groove"? How do you mean? Youre also talking about dynamics. I can see a link in dynamics and "the groove" of a beat but I still dont understand what youre saying.
I agree the Ableton sampler plugins need more modulation possibilities (a bigger matrix) to get more random variation in your rhythms but theres plenty of alternatives, both software and hardware.
I also think the Ableton sequencer most definitely needs an option to program control change. Or is it hidden somewhere??

I don't thing velocity is Ableton's biggest problem (if it is even a problem at all for that matter).
The biggest 2 problems I see is:
1. Too much reliance on the mouse. Not everyone has a good midi controller. Things like Auto Quantize have no good keyboard shortcuts to get to it.
2. Live's Quantize and Groove options are weak. Live can't do 128th notes at all. Live can't input quantize at 32nd notes. Live's swing functionality is also a bit weak as you can't have different swing percentages on different tracks unless you bounce or freeze audio.

...i guess this could go the other way too....say if one was recording a live band in pro tools and wants to correct the drummer and put him on regular straight timing - he could import the tracks into live - warp them to all be on beat (even the bleedover) and then transport back into proTools. Instant drummer on click.

I would NEVER quantize a real drummer, you will ruin both the sound and the feel. Record him again, tell him to tighten up.
