Reactive video synthesis/reactive visuals for Ableton

I need to try to add a visual element to my performances, and I was looking for visual synthesis modules that react in real-time to the music that's playing. I wouldn't mind having some control over it, but I would prefer something that would run in the background and react to the music.

I'm aware ...

Re: Debating getting a Push...

Keeping the LP + LP95 + Launch Control XL would be an option, no ?

I really like that with the LC XL you have constant and simulanous access to sends 1+2 of the first 8 tracks AND the first 8 macros of the selected track.Great for lots of simultanous live tweaking.

So the top row controls the ...

Re: Debating getting a Push...

Believe me, I totally understand your dilemma. The debate I was having in the 'Sitting on the Fence' thread is almost identical yours.

I summarized the pros & Cons in my 1st post. (the bits in quotes)

I wouldn't bother reading the whole thread as it contains a ...

Re: Debating getting a Push...

The best way to address your questions is perhaps to delve a little deeper into my workflow.

As far as audio is concerned I currently only use it sparingly, mostly by looping atmospheric nature sounds or random stuff I find. The rest of it is MIDI that uses sounds that I custom design myself using ...

A quick Google search says "no", which has again swung my opinion back towards the Push.

Aren't these decisions always fun?

Re: Debating getting a Push...

I used a Maschine Studio over the summer, and it was seriously impressive. Pretty much no computer needed after you start a project, and the included content is some of the best.

You might no even need a MIDI keyboard if you get on with the 4x4 grid on maschine. The pads are very responsive, you ...

Re: Debating getting a Push...

As time passes I'm beginning to lean towards getting a Maschine along with some kind of MIDI keyboard. Push is nice, but Maschine can chop samples so much more easily and intuitively (something I've wanted to do but been unable to).

I can do so much with just that and nothing else.

And free :)
I haven't heard of it before but it looks useful. I'll have to buy a Mini since my original Launchpad isn't compatible but that's fine with me.

Re: Debating getting a Push...

Rotaries are great too. And if you have any controllers already, it isn't hard to make the mapping thing work.

But faders are an extra convenience. Push is for certain a great instrument. It is easy to list many things which it is capable of. However, in most cases you're doing each of these ...

Re: Debating getting a Push...

Get faders. They allow you to quickly flick levels in a live setting.

One of the greatest challenges when it comes to 'mangling audio live' is creating a workable environment. I'd advice making a live set that you can manipulate using what you have and then imagining how having those replaced can ...

I do have the Launchpad already, except that I haven't yet figured out how to mangle audio live.

But I COULD do that by getting M4L and the Monome emulator, no?

Debating getting a Push...

I currently have an original Launchpad, Keith McMillen QuNeo, Korg KP3, and a Traktor Kontrol Z1 and compose exclusively with Ableton Live. I am selling the latter three because I do not use them enough and/or I do not enjoy using them to compose. My current workflow involves creating beats with my ...

Syncing delay with master tempo

I do this Frippertronic looping effect with Live where I use two delays on a return track, route it to an empty audio track, and then route that audio back to the same return track again to recreate Robert Fripp's technique sans the tape machines.

I wanted to try and find a way to sync this looping ...

Re: Frippertronics without plugins

Thank you for a great thread

1) My singing voice sucks,

If Brian Eno could release several classic records with his voice, you should not have problem. 8)

It's a matter of confidence. And not only Eno, but Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Muddy Waters, Gary Numan, Lemmy, etc.

EDIT: I also ...

Re: Frippertronics without plugins

So I got it successfully set up!

Two issues:

1) My singing voice sucks, so looping it sounds terrible. That's longer term...

2) Occasionally I'll get these massive spikes in volume on the audio track and return track. How can I stop this from happening?

BTW I am stuck using Live 8 Launchpad ...
