If you are trying to emulate specific consoles, then it's great. If there's not a specific sound you're looking for, then I'd just stick to Waves. But, it does sound good and it is cool because it's hardware accelerated.. But far from essential.

Will it improve your sound? Not likely in any ...

It's far from cheating.. with the amount of work it takes to properly prep tracks, you DO the work that you would with tables, just not on the spot. The real genius of live is when you start slicing up individual songs (in session) view and trigger different sections of the song as appropriate ...

Now the follow up question:

Can I MIDI sync to laptops via wireless, between two different applications (i.e Torq/Traktor etc. with Live?)

That would be exceptionally cool.

Logic Pro vs. Ableton

I did a search for this, in case this has been covered before, but I wasn't able to find much. So perhaps we'd like to open up this debate.

I currently use Ableton for everything, but where it really shines is for my DJing. I use Ableton on one computer and run M-Audio's Torq on another and the ...

What I do is set a very short (1 bar loop) on the vocal track and use a click track or a kick drum. Then I set warp markers on each downbeat of the lyric. You can achieve some interesting effects by experimenting. Beware of so-called "pickup" notes. This is when a singer starts a verse with a few ...

I don't do anything too fancy with the Axiom 25, but I use it as a controller during my Live-based DJ sets. I map the rotaries to master and send effects, have the drum pads mapped to some standard beats that I can use with multiple songs and I also have the mod wheel mapped to the crossfader. It ...

All extremely valuable insights.. thanks.. I'm working on a TTD remix as we speak and the bitter simplicity of the track is what makes it so powerful. Their work is much like a great chef.. simple and the finest ingredients prepared masterfully with just the right amount of seasoning while still ...

PS. just in case you don't know. Side-chain compression uses the audio from the kick as a "side-chain" input which activates the compression. The input audio (the pad sound), will then be compressed when the kick happens, and this gives the chugging sound found in lots of dance music.

VERY ...

so are you looking for that sound or how to create the effect?

I'm looking more for the effect rather than the specific sound. I don't typically worry about other people's particular sounds.. but that pulsing thing is something I've accidentally done, but I can't really replicate it. I've used ...

Whoosing/ Pulsing Sound (Gabriel and Dresden style)

Does anyone know how to use VCF-style filters in Ableton (like the Allen and Heath Xone 92 mixer)

More specifically, I'm trying to make that "whoosing/pulsating" sound that's very characteristic in most Gabriel and Dresden tracks. It sounds like the volume is being modulated or something, but I can ...
