OK, I answered my own question... a software update fixed the problem.
Amazingly, Live 8.0.x supports the APC20 as an Input and Output device in the MIDI setup but NOT as a Control Surface.
Upgrading to 8.2.0, I now find the APC20 listed as a choice in the Control Surface dropdown. All is well now ...

APC20 confusion
I've just purchased my 1st control surface, the Akai APC20, and plugged it into my MacBook Pro running Live 8.0. I'm having trouble getting Live to recognize the controller properly. According to the (very sparse) printed setup instructions, I should go into the Midi Sync preferences tab and select ...

Re: HOW TO: build a drum kit from samples?
Several 'correct' answers obviously, but one solution I'll throw on the table is to use something like the sfz file format http://www.cakewalk.com/devxchange/sfz.asp
What you'd be doing is mapping your sample files (kick.wav, snare.wav, etc) to a range of MIDI notes via a simple text file that's ...

Re: Crashing all the time!
Ouch. Sorry to hear your troubles persist but I thought I'd at least give it a shot :-) Best of luck to you in your bug tracking. One other thing you might do is have a look at your system and application event logs. If you've got some newly-failing hardware or driver updates, they might stand out ...

Re: Crashing all the time!
When debugging crashes, always start with what you last changed and work backwards. So in this case you may have already answered your question when you say you've switched soundcards and the obvious 1st thing to try would be revert to your old configuration (if possible) and see if the stability ...

Re: Newb qu: why are tracks yellowed out/muted in arrange view?
Any chance you could post a screen snapshot of the problem in Arrangement view? When you say "yellowed out" it just sounds like you've got all clips selected. That's how Live indicates a selection in Arrangement view. Unless I'm missing something from your description, I don't think the "yellowing ...

Re: Recommend a non Apple Monitor for Macbook Pro
My Macbook Pro 13" looks pretty decent on my Samsung 42" HDTV. Unfortunately there is an issue with highest supported resolution. It's not BAD, but I can't go as high with the laptop as I can with the same TV driven by my iMac 24". The higher resolution settings simply are not available in the ...

Re: Guitar questions
Thanks everyone for the responses. You've definitely convinced me this is something that needs to be done by a human player. And the reasons you gave are some great background info for me. Even when (in cases like this) the answer is "no", I think it's always good to understand the reasoning behind ...

Guitar questions
Two questions for the guitar players in the Ableton community...
(1) Assuming I have a realistic acoustic guitar instrument preset for my soft synth, how would I go about producing the strumming you can see here, on a cover version of Tonic's hit "If you could only see": http://www.youtube.com ...

Re: bass hits sound covered up
Most of what I've learned about this problem comes from reading and working through sample chapters in Rick Snoman's book The Dance Music Manual (which despite the title isn't just about dance music, but since dance relies so much on kick and bass working together the topic's covered extensively ...

Re: Recommendations for treating room for vocal recording
Thank you for the reply and the nice diagram to go with it! This is interesting info and is helping me learn, as I had assumed I should try to make the room as acoustically dead as possible. I'm rethinking this now... I suppose if there are some good things going on in the room (like that nice ...

Recommendations for treating room for vocal recording
I started voice lessons not too long ago and have been recording my singing in my small home studio. There are some problems in my recordings that are obviously due to sounds bouncing off the walls, ceiling, windows, etc. So I've ordered a set of Auralex tiles and would appreciate some advice on how ...

Re: Volume lowers
I'm afraid I don't know the answer to the question about the warning notice, Grey. I can only guess it was related to some type of recovery file or crash dump. You could probably post your question directly to Ableton tech support and get some direction. In my experience they are fabulous -- I've ...

Re: reverse engineer musical notes
Celemony Melodyne can do that, in fact it will generate a Standard MIDI File for you of the notes.
Wow, that's interesting, and I did not know that. I've tried it with Autotune which, like the hardware tune-up device I mentioned in my earlier post, worked well for notes from a single instrument ...

Re: "Phantom" reverb settings for mixing vocals?
Hey guys, thanks for the great info. And I've heard about using delay instead of reverb but wasn't sure how to even begin until leedsquietman's post gave me a solid starting point. I'm going to experiment with that tonight and see how it compares to the reverb-on-return method.
It appears that ...
