Since it's probably unlikely that you'd want to address "this_device 4" or "this_device -3", another possibility would be to simply have "next_device" and "prev_device" labels. And "next_device" could even take an optional argument for rare cases where you need to go more than one device downstream ...

1. opened Live, added a generic Max MIDI Effect, opened it for editing (oddly, this generates two "cycle~: No such object" errors in the Max window).

I'm able to open and edit Mathieu's device with no problems.

For example, can you monitor the offset of the red rectangle in Session view?

This is excellent, Mathieu, thank you. I just built something similar that gives all the parameter names for a selected device, but this is more comprehensive than my patcher. I agree this would be a very useful utility to include with Max4Live.

I was unable to repro by opening the LOM doc from the Finder again, so that doesn't seem to be the source of the problem.

I've run into this problem a few times but have yet to come up with a repro case. Max4Live will sometimes stop recognizing the M4L-specific objects. At first I thought this must be user error like having Max open before Live, or opening Max without Live, or something, but I just ran into it again ...
