discourse.org is a standard.
This is the plan.
oh no.
discourse is horrible.
Why?

Don't confuse it with Discord, which is horrible.

The lack of pagination, the dynamically loading content, the whole "infinite scrolling" thing. And many other UI elements that just rub me the wrong way.
And it's also slow (too much javascript, I guess). It never feels as responsive as classic forums.

IMO the best forum software is Xenforo (paid), but some free ones are good too. You just need to use the right theme and remove the clutter, such as signatures, user stats and so on.

+1 for better linking from the Ableton site. I have been gone for a bit, and it was hard to find a link to this. Reddit, Facebook, gearpage, all out rank this forum on Google. Prominent links on Ableton will help that

There is a lot of work involved in moving a forum to another platform.
Its not that hard .. Ive done it a few times although not for a few years Phpbb (this) is quite an easy one to migrate from, I went to VB .. which I probably shouldnt have in retrospect xenforo is where its at last time I checked , but its all paid stuff. They do offer a migration service though

what do we want to see? not to be a downer, but how about some actual change?

this thread's been around for 8 months, and the site is worse now than it was then. takes forever to load a page half the time, now, and no improvements of note. 😢

Well, it's probably not a high priority for Ableton. Though it's odd that the marketing team let such a huge asset fall so far, for so long.

If "engagement" is the goal of social media and a large engaged audience getting funnelled into a vertical product and service package the end goal - it's remarkable that they not only ignored this place but shuttered it away. A big slip up IMO.

I used to run the forums for VMG and EMI back when they were actual record companies, and the reason I got paid so much was because we were the connection to the consumers / fans. We ran competitions, meet and greets, Q and As with the popstars, etc. And it was great market research for what songs to release, or to try out promo ideas.

I know that was aeons ago. As was the heyday of this forum. But I still find it weird that Ableton go so scared of this place that they threw the baby out with the bath water.

I guess with a well structured replacement and a bit of a strategy behind the operation that a new forum could be as popular as this one once was. There's certainly enough Live users to do it.

The crazy thing is that the forum here still gets more views than their blog. When the page loads anyway. 8)

this thread's been around for 8 months,
You're right!
- I felt it could  take some time, thus anticipated and asked for your feedbacks asap...
- and those have helped tremendously in understanding where we want to go and what can/can't be done, and how
(and please keep 'em coming!)

plus:
- this is not a task without risks; we have to make sure we don't lose anything when migrating
- there's quite some legal stuff to deal with (servers, Europe and such)
- things can take time because... companies
Oh, and meanwhile, did anybody notice those slowdowns?

But it's totally on-going and nobody slept on this! Thanks for your help and patience

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make, my friend? I myself wrote not to confuse the two.

I use several Discourse-based forums. I've seen you around as well.
I've also used Discord, but I don't like the chat format. It's hard to follow a specific topic with all the noise, and it's even worse to get back to it after a long period. If you can find it at all.

Discord is not even an option to replace this forum, since people can already use the Ableton Discord. Users who don't like Discord and want a more traditional forum are better off with Discourse as a replacement.

one thing that would be nice would be to not lock announcement posts. it’s the kind of thing that gets people engaged, but locking the post means if people want to actually discuss it they have to start a separate thread for it, rather than just commenting on the announcement.

just moderate them, same as any other thread. not sure what benefit there is to locking them.

You're welcome opening an Extensions SDK thread.
I think, historically users have always created threads following announcements because they're sometimes faster than us 😅
That's probably why we got used to lock our posts.
But you're bringing a very valid question, and tbh I actually was a bit hesitant with the Extensions one, because there's the advantage that it's pinned...
You know what, let's open it. Thx for pointing that out 👍

another suggestion (that I'm sure others have already made) would be to open links in new tabs instead of in the existing tab. usually if I want to click something someone posts, I still want to be able to access the post. right clicking and clicking open in new tab works, but only if I remember it's required.
