Generally for pads/synth-string I guess you'll want to:
At least 2 or 3 oscilators (I think I use sawtooth), one of which is tuned an octave higher, also detune the oscs with fine tune so they are a few cents (just a little) out of tune w. each others.
It's the interaction between the almost in tune ...

Re: Computer preparation before setting up studio
I'd say go with two partitions.
Operating system and ableton installed on C:, keep as much of your own data/songs/samples and downloaded stuff you want to keep on D:
I think something like 80GB on C: should be enough for windows, ableton and some other programs.

Nudge everything an 8th to the left?

Re: MPD32 not showing in MIDI Ports
There is a problem/bug with windows and USB-Midi devices, the problem is thare is a limit to the number of devices connected (I think 10).
Normally this wouldn't be a problem for most people, except that if you switch USB port on a device it will be counted as a 'new' device .

Re: Using standard MIDI sounds from a MIDI-file
You're quite right  sorry.
The midi tracks would contain program change or bank select commands (special CC messages), I think this is what you see in the midi editor to the left in the boxes "Bank", "Sub bank" and "program".

Re: Using standard MIDI sounds from a MIDI-file
If you search around about MIDI standard sounds/instruments you should find there is a list of instruments/sound types connected to the MIDI standard (though this list was alway 'suggested' sounds), this was for synth manufacturers make presets following some sort of convention or standard.

Re: Recreating ambient sound
+1 what kanuck said.
Generally with subtractive synthesis (basicly all synths) it's best to start with a square or a sawtooth wave, since these contain lots of harmonics/overtones (Square has the odd numbered overtones (mults. of base frequency) 1, 3, 5... while sawtooth has all overtones 1, 2, 3 ...

Hmm, kinda sounds like a 'natural harmonic'/overtone (like the ones you can get on 5th, 7th and 12th fret)?

Re: sample recording
Microphones are a djungle of opinions, though some common recommendations I see are:
Shure SM58 - dynamic (doesn't need phantom power), one of the worlds most popular mics.
Rode NT1 or 2 - condenser mic.

Re: LaunchPad
You can't change channels on the launchpad.
Try using specific MIDI port assignments in ableton (instead of just 'Any source'/'All MIDI') or change your VCMs channel if possible.

Check out these free plugins for midi-LFO:s (I imagine you could midi-map in ableton from these).

Re: balancing audio from soundcard
You would normally use one track in ableton, and select 1+2 as external input.
So you shouldn't need to record onto 2 separate mono tracks, but one stereo.
However if you do record to 2 separate tracks, you can of course (stereo) pan track one to the left and track 2 to the right.

Yes, I do think the 'Upgrade from live lite' is the one you should get.
